This makes it hard to trust Amazon reviews of his work, as many of them appear to be written by idolising fans living for every honeyed word that trips flittingly from his gilded tongue, and are unwilling if not unable to see anything other than perfect brilliance in all of his works. Occasionally there is a whiff of Arnold Drake's zany surreality but not enough to earn much goodwill. Review: ‘Doom Patrol Omnibus’ shows Grant Morrison’s master plan Comic book writer Grant Morrison and the cover of “The Doom Patrol Omnibus.” (Vertigo / DC)

I've had a lot of extra free time for some reason the last few weeks, so I decided to use part of it to re-read this massive, 1200+ page tome that serves as the Platonic ideal of a Grant Morrison series. But this comic series was taken over by a young Grant Morrison at issue 19, so there is a silver lining to this series...just not actually present in this volume. Grant Morrison is a writer I have a love-hate relationship with. At his best, he writes intricately constructed stories that burst at the seams with imagination and weirdness.

An absolutely beautiful collection of classic 80s DC action, with a few 70s gems thrown in too!

Doom Patrol - "I, Kranus, Robot Emperor" (16 pages) Doom Patrol: "Who Dares To Challenge The Arsenal?" I was also pleasantly surprised by Richard Case’s artwork — it definitely looks of its time but not at all in a bad way, and fits the tone of the story exceptionally well. I may not even hand onto this volume and I am a HUGE Doom Patrol fan. It is a deep read but it is well worth it. I read the comic books Doom Patrol volume 2 - #19-39 in which Morrison revolutionises the series with his allegorical, metaphorical and satire laden surreal fest! The stories by Kupperberg are entertaining but given that a fair chunk of the stories reprinted here are guest-spots the Patrol made in other titles (Supergirl, Superman, etc.) July 29, 2017. Where else would you see a character that is a transvestite talking street? The characters were the same, Rebis, Crazy Jane, and Mr Nobody being my favorites.

This omnibus covers the Paul Kupperberg era of the Doom Patrol and introduces characters such as Dorothy Spinner, Celsius, Tempest, Lodestone and Karma. This book is absolutely massive and it ends up being a hindrance, because the story should have ended a lot earlier.

Heartwarming, heart breaking, hilarious, scary, and just plain weird.

Definitely worth the price.

This is easily in my Top 5 favorite comics of all time, and quite possibly the best thing from either Marvel or DC. Your recently viewed items and featured recommendations, Select the department you want to search in, Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 March 2020.

At the other end you had this: brash, bawling, loud, surreal, probably deserved to be called a word with -punk added at the end but never was, thank God.

I was also pleasantly surprised by Ric.

Morrison seems to want his audience to have fun and be happy while writing intelligent, dare I say brilliant, storylines. There's a problem loading this menu right now. This book weighs in as creative kickass pound per pound. Easily the least of the many DP incarnations, this is 80s comics at is worst, alas.

Although this omnibus is HUGE, quality paper has been used and the illustrations are vibrant.

Kupperberg, a childhood pal of DC's head honcho Paul Levitz, is not a strong writer and Erik Larson's early work is not much to write home about either. Season 1 Doom Patrol Critics Consensus.

The Supergirl stories, where the "new" DP guest starred are good examples of cheesy storytelling that works.

Grant Morrison wasn’t the first to take a surrealistic approach to superhero comics, but before his Doom Patrol no-one had taken it as far or sustained it as long. "There's a better world.

The book is well made and very sturdy and heavy like I said.

Doom Patrol: "Brothers In Blood" (14 pages)

Traditional superhero comics were now at their best since the 1960s after a long period of stagnation that had lasted for a decade or so. It so cool to see how this run continues to influence the team even in the most current run. Some of the stories go way out but that’s to be expected from Morrison. This, one of his most notable early works, collected in a massive omnibus, probably veers more towards the latter category, but the imagination constantly rescues it, as do the sympathetic characters caught in the middle of the weirdness (and who sometimes have the weirdness caught in the middle of them). 4 people found this helpful I may not even hand onto this volume and I am a HUGE Doom Patrol fan.
